Spinning Going Mainstream?
How do you know when something (anything) is going mainstream? When Wal-Mart starts to carry the products! A post this week on the New Jersey Fiber Fanatics Group on Yahoo found a few interesting items on the Wal-Mart site. Spindles and spinning fiber! I couldn't believe it!
I have to admit I am not sure how I feel about this. I am happy to see that this wonderful process of turning fiber into yarn, but does it cheapen the process? I don't know. They are also selling the fiber too. This I will admit, I will probably try the fiber. Some of the colors look really nice! But again, I hope it doesn't hurt the prices of those who care of fiber animals and provide that fiber to the masses.
What do you think? I would love to hear your thoughts!

I was shocked to find nostepindes in 2 sizes at Hobby Lobby. While it's a yarn tool, most people who have heard of it are spinners. Maybe the spinning wheels are next.

Wow! That is surprising! I've never been in a Hobby Lobby. They aren't around here. I would like to check one out some day. Thanks for sharing with us!

My niece is interested in learning to spin. We purchased a drop spindle and rovings to get her started. We are in central NJ (Somerset County). There are guilds in NW NJ, NE NJ, southern NJ, and southern NJ. Is there anything in the central part of the state (Somerset, Middlesex, Morris, or Hunterdon counties?

Essex County and surrounding regions

I would also recommend signing up for the Yahoo Group: New Jersey Fiber Fanatics (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NJFiberFanatics/). This is a wonderful group of spinners, knitters, crocheters, weavers and the like. Lots of the members can recommend small spinning groups in your area as well as teachers who can provide private lessons.
I hope that helps! Please be sure to keep us all posted on her progress!
Andrea
