Mixing Fiber Arts and Earth Day

OK, so Earth Day is almost over and I am finally able to sit down at my computer. I couldn't however, let this day pass without a post about this great day!

When you think about it, yarn can be a great renewable resource. Sheep are sheared and their wool can be spun, felted, woven and more! Need more? No problem! They just grow more!

Yarn companies now make yarn from renewable resources like bamboo, recycled cotton, organic cotton, banana plants and lots more. One of my favorite "recycled" yarn is made from sari silk. No two skeins are the same and the results can be simply amazing!

But many yarn companies are really thinking out of the box when it comes to recycling materials. Caron is making a yarn now that includes recycled plastic bottles. Red Heart also has a Eco yarn in their list of offerings.

The ultimate however, is taking those annoying plastic bags and creating your own "yarn" to make a reusable bag!  Marlo's Crochet Corner not only teaches how to make the yarn, but provides the steps to make a great tote!

So as you can see, there are a lot of ways to be "green" in your fiber journey. Enjoy the trip!
