Rhinebeck Review

This past weekend was the annualNew York State Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck, NY. I look forward to this event every year and took lots of photos during the day!

My day started out with my ride from my home in Rockaway, NJ to Milford PA. I kept my radio off on the way up, enjoying the quiet and low light. I even pulled over in Lafayette, NJ to shoot a quick picture of the municipal pond. I just love watching the condensation coming off the water. Why the ride to Milford? The yarn shop, Jill Deal Yarn, runs a bus trip on the Sunday of the festival every year. I sign up as soon as the news is out, often in the middle of the summer, when no one is even thinking about the fall! This is a great way to head up to the festival and not worry about the ride up or driving home after a long day of walking around and shopping!

After a nice two hour nap during the ride up, I excitedly headed off. The bus was parked on the opposite site from its normal location, which took me a moment to orient myself. I have to say I was surprised at what I walked through. I never realized it, but there were some kids rides and carnival-style events at the "end" of the show. I quickly moved past that section and moved onto the first building. As always, there were some great vendors there, including a neat little wheel that is brand new. I tried it out and just loved it! The designer actually sold the four he had with him, took orders on four more and told everyone else he would contact them as they come up on the waiting list. He actually ran out of business cards and paperwork and after trying it, I can see why. It was just great! Perfect for someone who lives in a small space or wants a wheel that is easy to take on the go! I signed up for information and will share more info as soon as I get it.

Of course I had to stop by and drool at the Golding booth. Last year I purchased one and I still love it!

Of course I had to check out all the critters. I keep telling Glenn one day I am going to come home with a bunny! I had a great chat with a woman who breeds Coopworth sheep and enjoyed checking out all the other sheep.

I also think I finally figured out what type of loom I want - a triangle loom! I saw some examples of what can be made with them and I think it is the perfect place to start! There is no "warping fear" as I call it. I didn't make a triangle loom purchase at the festival, but I think that will be my Christmas gift to myself.

I picked up some lovely Icelandic fiber and two skeins of yarn. So, by all accounts, I was pretty tame with the purchases. During the afternoon, I had a cup of coffee and a cranberry scone and just enjoyed the warmth of the afternoon sun. After spending the week with lots of people at work, it was nice to take a day alone at my pace. I must say I was disappointed I missed the opportunity to my fellow New Jersey Fiber Fanatics during the get together. I'm sorry I missed them! Oh well, there's always next year!

At the end of the day, I headed back to the bus and settled in for the long ride home. And what did Jill have for us? Home-made cookies, apples, chocolate and water bottles! A great end-of-the-day snack! Then a nap and before I knew it, we were back in Milford! The last leg was my ride back home. It is always a long day, but always a great one!

I love going to the fiber festivals and can't wait until next year!

I absolutely will! The creator demonstrated how to break it down and it was just amazing! I will be doing a blog entry on this wheel as soon as I get the information.
